Cornelius George ‘C.G.’ Schinstock
MANHATTAN - Cornelius George ‘C.G.’ Schinstock, 91, of Manhattan, died Saturday June 17, 2017, at the Via Christi Village in Manhattan.
He was born on September 16, 1925, on the family farm north of Kinsley, Kansas in Edwards County; the son of John H. and Barbara (Adelhardt) Schinstock. He grew up on the same farm attending St. Peter & Paul Catholic Grade School and Kinsley High School.
C.G. grew up in a difficult time in American history, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. Much to his regret, C.G. as the youngest of three sons, was unable to complete his senior year while working the family farm and dairy, and was deferred from military service to help keep America’s Breadbasket going during wartime.
On November 5, 1947, in Dodge City, Kansas, C.G. was united in marriage to Eileen Weiss. She preceded him in death on October 10, 2013.
C.G. and Eileen farmed and ranched in the Kinsley area until their retirement. They were active members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. He helped build both the church and school where their children attended. In 2006, they moved to Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community, becoming members of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Manhattan community allowed them to continue to be involved with their family’s lives.
In addition to his strong faith and love of family, he enjoyed traveling with Eileen, flying his own plane, and playing cards with friends up to just a few weeks before his death. C.G. and Eileen began their travels with their children, always owning a camper of some sort. As the children left home, they flew, cruised and RV’d, traveling to many places all over the world. In later years, they camped with the Good Sam Club, making many friends along the way. His final trip was a Marian Shrine tour in Europe the summer of 2014, with his daughters, in honor of Eileen.
He was proceeded in death by: his parents; brothers, Albert and Edward; and sisters, Marie Kallaus and Angeline Bogner.
C.G. is survived by: his children, Ann Looney (Ben) of Dodge City, KS, Bob Schinstock, of Medicine Lodge, KS, Bill Schinstock (Marla) of Lawrence, KS, Janet Prather (Ervin) of Ottawa, KS, David Schinstock (Karen) of Wichita, KS, and Dale Schinstock (Susan) of Manhattan, KS; and his 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan. The family will greet friends during a visitation following the Vigil until 8:30 p.m. at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with Father Frank Coady as Celebrant.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2017, at the St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery in Kinsley, Kansas.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Mr. Schinstock, are suggested to the Flint Hills Breadbasket or to Shepherd’s Crossing. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
