Mary Phyllis Speck, 95, passed away on December 29, 2025, at the Kansas Soldiers Home. She was born in Ensign, Kansas on October 1, 1930 to Fred & Mary (Frankenberger) Newberry.
At the age of 3 the family moved to Pocahontas, Arkansas where she attended Harmony Country School and St. Paul’s Catholic School. She moved to Dodge City to attend St. Anthony School of Nursing.
Phyllis was united in marriage to Charles Speck on April 30, 1953 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. After Charles served in the Navy for 20 years the family moved to Johnson City, Kansas and later to Offerle, Kansas. After owning and operating the Offerle Cafe for 18 1/2 years they moved to Pocahontas, Arkansas to care for her parents.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents, a brother Thomas (Josephine) Newberry, and a sister Ruth (Dale) Stauth.
She is survived by two sons, Fred (Yvonne) Speck of Guymon, Oklahoma, Mike (Julie) Speck of Dodge City, Kansas, four grandchildren Cami (Brian) Roth of Topeka, Kansas, Ashley (Robert) Domsch of Overland Park, Kansas, Cameron Speck and Kelli Herbel of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Lance Speck of Greeley, Colorado, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, a brother Kenneth Newberry of Jonesboro, Arkansas and godson Corey McAvoy of Offerle, Kansas.
Phyllis was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Offerle, Kansas.
Visitation will be Friday, January 2, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at McKillip Memorial Funeral Home, Kinsley, Kansas.
A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, her mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, both at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Offerle. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Offerle.
Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Soldiers Home or to Hospice of the Prairie in care of McKillip Funeral Home.
